An idea whose time has come
At Opus Holdings, we are playing the 'long game'. And, it isn't hard convincing people why. As private equity holding periods (the average time that they stay in an investment) average three to five years, many companies are getting flipped rapidly from owner to owner. This creates chaos for employees and customers and promotes short-term thinking around investing in the business.
We think that the right way to partner with a business is with a long time horizon.
As we execute on this mission, we have encountered many like-minded friends - Sator Grove, Markel Ventures, Permanent Equity and many others.
We are reminded of what Rick Rubin says in his book The Creative Act:
If you have an idea you're excited about and you don't bring it to life, it's not uncommon for the idea to find its voice through another maker. This isn't because the other artist stole your idea, but because the idea's time has come.
There are more than 4,000 private equity firms and it's safe to guess that most of them are playing the 'short game'.
'Playing the long game' is an idea whose time has come. And, there's room for all of us.
